How long before boarding should my dog be vaccinated?

At least two weeks before your dog boards, and two to four weeks is safer. Why kennels want the gap, how C3 and C5 differ, and what to do if you are late.

Published

Get your dog vaccinated at least two weeks before boarding, and aim for two to four weeks if you can. Many Australian kennels will not accept a vaccine given in the last 14 days, because it has not had time to work. Check your dog's certificate the day you book the kennel, not the week you leave.

Why do kennels want a two-week gap?

A vaccine does not protect your dog the moment it goes in. The immune system needs time to respond, and a kennel is exactly where your dog will meet other dogs' germs.

Pet Resorts Australia, for example, requires vaccinations "a minimum of two weeks (14 days) prior to boarding". Vetwest recommends pets are fully vaccinated two to four weeks before a stay. If your dog's booster is overdue, a vet visit the day before you fly out usually will not count.

How long do kennel cough vaccines take to work?

It depends on how the vaccine is given. Scott Weese, a veterinarian at the Ontario Veterinary College, writes that the intranasal kennel cough vaccine takes three to five days to be effective, and the injectable one takes a week or more.

The two-week rule covers both, with room to spare.

What is the difference between C3 and C5?

The C3 covers the three core dog diseases: distemper, infectious hepatitis (canine adenovirus) and parvovirus. The Australian Veterinary Association and the WSAVA 2024 vaccination guidelines treat these as core vaccines for every dog.

The C5 adds the two main causes of kennel cough: canine parainfluenza virus and *Bordetella bronchiseptica*. Most boarding kennels ask for a C5, or a C3 plus a separate kennel cough vaccine.

VaccineCoversUsually enough for boarding?
C3Distemper, hepatitis, parvovirusOften not on its own
C3 + kennel coughC3 plus parainfluenza and BordetellaUsually yes
C5Distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, BordetellaUsually yes

In the ACT this is law. The Animal Welfare (Overnight Animal Boarding Establishments) Mandatory Code of Practice 2021 requires boarded dogs to have a C5 vaccination within the past 12 months.

Does the kennel cough vaccine mean my dog cannot catch it?

No. It lowers the risk. The Australian Pet Care Association's canine cough factsheet points out that the vaccine is made from one strain of more than 100, so a vaccinated dog can still pick up a cough. It also says only a relatively small percentage of dogs are affected, and that the intranasal Bordetella vaccine should be considered for dogs that board.

Symptoms usually show roughly three to seven days after exposure, so a cough can appear after your dog comes home. The APCA's best defence is a dog that is fully vaccinated with a booster every year.

What about puppies?

Puppies need to finish their whole vaccination course first, then wait out the same gap. Pet Resorts Australia asks for two weeks after the third and final puppy vaccine, which puts most puppies at around 18 weeks old before their first stay. Ask your kennel before you book a young puppy.

What if my dog's vaccination is overdue?

When you noticeWhat to do
Four or more weeks before the stayBook the booster now. You are fine.
Two to four weeks beforeBook the booster this week and bring the new certificate.
Less than two weeks beforeCall the kennel before you do anything else. Some will say no.
At check-inExpect to be turned away at kennels with a 14-day rule.

How do I avoid the last-minute scramble?

Know your dog's due dates before you book anything. Most of us find the certificate in an old email, squint at the date, then do it again for the groomer.

Tend Pass keeps your dog's vaccination dates, and the original certificates they came from, in one place. You share them with the kennel by link or QR code. If the kennel uses Tend Connect, the details drop into the booking and the dates are checked against the kennel's policy before you arrive.

More checklists: what a boarding kennel needs, dog daycare requirements, what groomers ask for and cattery requirements.
